Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay has introduced a resolution in the Tamil Nadu Assembly opposing the proposed delimitation exercise and supporting the implementation of a 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha.
The Lok Sabha currently has 543 seats. Vijay has argued that any delay in implementing the women’s reservation could affect political representation, particularly in southern states.
Vijay Raises Concerns Over Delimitation
Vijay’s resolution focuses on the possible impact of delimitation on the political representation of southern states. Delimitation involves changing the boundaries and number of parliamentary constituencies based on population.
Southern states have expressed concerns that their efforts in population control could affect their representation if future seat allocation gives greater weight to population size. Vijay’s position highlights the need to protect the political interests of these states while carrying out any changes to parliamentary constituencies.
He has argued that the concerns of southern states should be considered carefully before any major changes are made.
Support for 33% Women’s Reservation
The resolution also supports providing women with 33% reservation in the Lok Sabha. Vijay said greater representation of women is necessary to improve gender equality in Indian politics.
The women’s reservation law provides for reserving one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies for women, subject to the conditions and implementation process set out under the law.
Vijay has called for the reservation to be implemented without unnecessary delay. He believes women should have a stronger role in decision-making and lawmaking at both the national and state levels.
Balancing Regional and Gender Representation
The resolution brings together two important political issues: regional representation and women’s participation in politics.
Vijay’s stand is that reforms should not reduce the political voice of southern states. At the same time, he wants stronger representation for women in elected bodies.
The issue of delimitation is expected to remain an important topic in discussions between political parties and states. The debate will focus on how India can update parliamentary representation while maintaining a fair balance between states.
By introducing the resolution, Vijay has brought attention to the need for political reforms that consider both regional interests and gender equality.
