Virat Kohli on One-Format Focus: Contentment Over Anxiety

Virat Kohli’s recent performance in Thiruvananthapuram, where he scored an unbeaten 139 runs, was more than just another successful chase. It showcased a batsman who has found peace in playing fewer formats, allowing him to stay calm during crucial moments.

India successfully chased 296 to defeat the West Indies by eight wickets in the first ODI, with 50 balls remaining unused. Shubman Gill contributed with 110 runs, while Kohli’s 139 not out earned him his 55th ODI century and a place among the elite with 15,000 ODI runs—a milestone reached faster than any other batsman except Sachin Tendulkar.

Kohli now plays only 50-over cricket for India. When asked if reducing formats has brought clarity, he pointed to the World Cup less than a year away. His focus is clear: work on different aspects of his game, stay physically fit, and contribute to the team’s success.

For Kohli, ticking these boxes means he still has time left in this format. He finds joy in each opportunity rather than feeling pressured to perform. “I just want to enjoy every day and express myself,” he said.

Kohli emphasized the importance of playing positively without recklessness. While a free mind is crucial, it requires a fit body to execute effectively. He stressed that there are no shortcuts in cricket—effort must be consistent whether running doubles or batting under pressure.

Reflecting on his mindset, Kohli remains grateful for his career and grounded by remembering his humble beginnings. Fame and attention can make one forget where they came from, but he stays focused on the present.

“I enjoy every minute I play for India,” he added, acknowledging how fortunate he is to represent the country. His goal is to keep working hard, remain positive, and bring smiles to others through his performance.
