West Java Landslide Kills 17, Many Missing

The number of people who died in a landslide in Indonesia’s West Java province has risen to 17, the country’s disaster management agency said on Monday (January 26, 2026). Officials also said that many people are still missing.

The landslide struck a residential area in the Bandung Barat region early on Saturday (January 24, 2026). Heavy rains had been falling since the previous day, making the soil loose and causing the land to collapse.

Several houses were buried under mud and debris, trapping many residents inside. Rescue teams rushed to the area and began search and rescue operations to find survivors. Emergency workers, police, and volunteers have been working continuously to clear the mud and look for those still missing.

Authorities fear that the death toll could rise as dozens of people have not yet been located. Injured residents have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The weather agency has warned that heavy rainfall may continue in West Java and other regions for another week. Officials have asked people living in landslide-prone areas to stay alert and move to safer places if necessary.

Landslides are common in Indonesia during the rainy season due to heavy rains and unstable soil in hilly areas.
