Indian wushu star Roshibina Devi won the silver medal in the women’s 60kg sanda event at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya. She was defeated by China’s Zhang Xiaoyu in the final by a score of 2-0.
The medal is another major achievement in Roshibina’s career and makes her the first Indian to win medals at three consecutive Asian Games. She previously won a bronze medal at the 2018 Asian Games and a silver medal at the 2023 Hangzhou Games.
Roshibina was born on December 30, 2000, in Bishnupur district of Manipur. She comes from a farming family. Her father, Naorem Damu, is a farmer, while her mother helps with agricultural work. She also has an elder sister and a younger brother.
Roshibina began training in wushu when she was 12 years old. She started learning the sport under coach Premkumar at a Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre.
Interestingly, wushu was not her first choice. Roshibina was initially interested in boxing, but her plans changed after she attended a district-level wushu competition. The experience encouraged her to take up the sport seriously.
She quickly began making progress in her new discipline. One of her early international achievements came at the 2016 World Junior Wushu Championships in Bulgaria, where she won a bronze medal.
At the 2018 Asian Games, Roshibina continued her rise by winning another bronze medal. Five years later, she improved her performance at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, where she claimed silver.
Her achievements also earned her the Arjuna Award, one of India’s major national sports honours.
Roshibina’s participation in the 2026 Asian Games came amid controversy. Another athlete, Choudhary, had made allegations of mental harassment against her. Despite the controversy surrounding her selection, Roshibina remained focused on competition and progressed through the tournament.
On her way to the final, she defeated opponents from Bangladesh, Macao and Indonesia. Her run ended against China’s Zhang Xiaoyu, who won the final 2-0.
Although she missed out on the gold medal, Roshibina’s silver medal added another milestone to her career. Her three consecutive Asian Games medals — bronze in 2018, silver in 2023 and silver in 2026 — have established her as one of India’s notable wushu athletes.
