As part of efforts to prepare the city for heavy rain, floods, and cyclones, members of women self-help groups took part in a disaster risk reduction training session on Wednesday. The training was organised by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) at the Ambattur Zone office.
The aim of the programme is to train important community groups to become “disaster champions” who can help others during emergencies. These trained members will guide people on safety measures, evacuation procedures, and basic relief steps during natural disasters.
The disaster management training was conducted by the GCC’s Storm Water Drain (SWD) Department. It was held under the Integrated Urban Flood Management Project for the Chennai Kosasthalaiyar basin. The project is supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Institutional Strengthening and Reform Consultant (ISRC).
During the session, participants were taught how to respond during floods and cyclones, how to identify risks in their neighbourhoods, and how to coordinate with officials during emergencies. They also learned about early warning systems and the importance of community support in disaster situations.
Officials said that empowering local groups, especially women self-help groups, will help build stronger and more prepared communities across Chennai.
