In Chennai, election campaigns are focusing strongly on women’s welfare this time. Back in 2006, M. Karunanidhi, the leader of the DMK, had said that his party’s election manifesto was the “hero” of the campaign when he promised free colour televisions to households.
Now, in the 2026 elections, his son M. K. Stalin has described the manifesto as the “heroine” of the campaign. He announced several new promises focused mainly on improving the lives of women.
Not just the DMK, but other major parties like the AIADMK and TVK are also giving importance to women’s empowerment in their election promises.
Many of these promises include financial support, welfare schemes, and programs aimed at helping women become more independent and secure. Political parties believe that focusing on women’s needs will play a key role in gaining support from voters.
Overall, this election shows a clear shift, with women’s welfare becoming a central theme in the campaign strategies of all major parties.
