Starring: Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar;

Directed by Shankar;

With due respects to ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’, it wouldn’t be wrong to call Shankar’s long-awaited spectacle about Man, Robot and Radiation the biggest letdown of the year.

Take a deep breath when you enter the theatre to see this digital-age mayhem. You need extra strength to make it through the cheerless cautionary drama.

‘2:0’ is a work of FX-driven misadventure that screams for attention. The larger-than-life combats between the robot Chitthi and the rampageous environmentalist Pakshi Rajan(so called, because he loves birds, isn’t that subtle?) are staged with the frenzied determination of religious rallies on roads orchestrated by red-eyed youngsters who don’t know any better.

There is a quality of desperate anxiety to please audiences which ultimately reduces this film to an epic mess. When a film screams for attention the audiences recoil in embarrassment. Director Shankar, never known for subtlety, goes for the sledgehammer effect where every thunderous thud is driven home with a disdainful disregard for the audiences’ visual and aural sensory perceptions.

While the plot pleads for environmental to be curbed it induces a noise pollution far more hazardous than any cell phone related catastrophe. The soundtrack is obstreperous and Rahman’s music is sinfully soul-less.

The anarchic narrative knocks you senseless with its senselessness. What on earth is the film trying to say about ecological imbalance? That the cellphones of the world must be annihilated from the world to save the planet? This thought- process is put through a grueling stream of clumsily-staged sequences showing mobs being devoured by thousands of cellphones.

The villain Pakshi Rajan is not really a villain because… well… he’s played by Akshay Kumar. So the character’s outward ferocity, punctuated by makeup borrowed from ‘Friday The 13th’, is given a sympathetic backstory about a bird lover whose pleas for a reduction on cellphone towers is mocked by the powers-that-be.

There is a telecom minister who makes so many sneering faces I thought the film had finally decided to get satirical about its message… But no… It’s all a serious business.

This post-intermission interlude of about 15 minutes when we see Akshay as the caring bird-lover is the only chunk of the sprawling unwieldy narrative that has an emotional grip. The rest of the film feels as robotic as Amy Jackson’s performance. That she actually plays a robot doesn’t matter. Every actor seems to have been given the brief to pull out all stops.

The agonizing film has hundreds of junior artistes who have to look startled/scared/traumatized. I’ve never seen a mob of actors hamming so much, and enjoying it to the hilt.

Alas, we cannot bring ourselves to share the mob’s enthusiasm even when we get two Rajinikanth for the price of one. The novelty of the double deal wears off within 15 minutes as director Shankar unleashes a bloodless tide of chaos and incoherence seldom witnessed and scarcely tolerated.

“There is a moment in the story that emphasizes the other living creatures on planet earth. It says that the planet not only belongs to the human race but also to animals and birds,” said the ‘Padman’ actor during a media interaction on Monday.

“Though animals and plants cannot raise their voice against human beings, they have the right to live. So do not spoil the mother nature,” he said.

The film is a sequel to ‘Enthiran’ released in 2010 and written and directed by S Shankar. It featured Rajnikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Akshay is working with Shankar for the first time. “We used to speak in Marathi on the sets and we used to enjoy that. Shankar is a brilliant director to work with and he is a very humble man. It was so interesting to see how he would add a quirk of entertainment in any or every dialogue of our daily conversation.”

“He is a very professional person. He narrated me the whole story, the screenplay and I knew each character of the film from the beginning. I was impressed by the concept and wondered why nobody has explored the subject so far,” said Akshay.

The film that reportedly had a budget of Rs 543 crore is considered the most expensive film of India made in 3D.

The actor urges the audience to watch the film in 3D at the theatre.

“This film is not converted into a 3D film after shooting, but originally shot in 3D format and therefore the whole experience was different for us. It will be a unique experience for the audience as well,” said the actor.

The trailer of the film was released on November 3.

Asked if the extensive use of technology would overpower the core story of the film, Akshay said, “I do not think so. I would rather say that the use of technology has enhanced the narration. The global message of the film comes across crystal clear.”

‘2.0’ is releasing on November 29.

“Till today I have done around 135-140 films and in the initial part of my career I did only action films because my producers and directors used to feel that I will not be able to do acting, so they only made me action in their films,” Akshay said.

Akshay further added that after doing action films, he started to feature in different kind of genres.

“Slowly, I started doing comedy and romantic films then I started doing socially relevant films,” he said while speaking at the panel discussion titled as ‘Universal access to sanitation’ as a brand ambassador of Harpic on the eve of World Toilet Day here on Monday.

The actor has won National Film Award in 2017 which is considered as highest award in India in the field of acting for his combined brilliant performances in “Rustom” and “Airlift”.

Akshay next will be seen in S. Shankar’s “2.0′, Anurag Singh’s “Kesari”, Farhad Samji’s “Housefull 4”, Raj Mehta’s “Good News” and Jagan Shakti’s “Mission Mangal”.

A sequel to Shankar’s 2010 blockbuster “Enthiran”, the film has been produced by Lyca Productions and is gearing for release on November 29.

“2.0” also stars Akshay Kumar, Amy Jackson, Adil Hussain and Sudhanshu Pandey in important roles.

Speaking at the trailer launch, Rajinikanth said the film has been made on a lavish budget of nearly Rs. 600 crore.

“Mark my words, the film will be a super hit. Advance wishes to Shankar and Lyca Productions. Nearly Rs. 600 crore has been spent on the film. The film wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Lyca,” Rajinikanth said.

He said that the makers spent lavishly on the film for the vision of Shankar.

“This is not a Rajinikanth film. The money has been spent on one man Shankar, who has never failed to entertain audiences. This is his vision and I laud Lyca Productions for backing him,” he added.

In the film, Rajinikanth plays a scientist and a robot.

Speaking on the occasion, Shankar said audience will see Rajinikanth in multiple avatars and it’ll be a treat to watch.

“Audiences will see him as scientist Vaseegaran, robot Chitti and 2.0 version of Chitti. There will also be a giant version of Chitti in the climax. We also have another version but we’d like to keep that as a surprise,” he said.

Shankar raved about Rajinikanth’s commitment.

“When we were all set to shoot the climax in a stadium in Delhi, Rajini sir fell ill. Six months of planning had gone into the preparation of the climax which was supposed to be shot in 40 days. Despite his bad health, Rajini sir insisted that we go ahead with the shoot,” Shankar said.

“We shot in extremely hot temperature. Rajini sir had to shoot wearing 12 kilo robotic suit. We were stunned by his commitment,” he added.

“2.0”, which will release in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, has music by AR Rahman.

Akshay plays the antagonist in superstar Rajinikanth’s “2.0”, which marks his southern debut.

Speaking at the trailer launch event here, Akshay said working on the project has been both challenging and fun.

Akshay began his speech in Tamil amid a loud cheer from the audiences. He said he practiced for two hours to speak in Tamil.

Quickly switching to English, Akshay said: “I can’t express my feelings in words. I’m really thankful to Shankar sir and Lyca Productions for this opportunity.”

Talking about his role, he said: “It was a very challenging role and it took a toll on my body. But the pain and sacrifice were worth it. My character required around 4 hours of prosthetic make-up and another hour and a half to remove it. In my whole career, I’ve never put so much of make-up.”

The film, slated to release on November 29, in Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu, also stars Amy Jackson, Adil Hussain and Sudhanshu Pandey in key roles.

“I have just landed back in the country last night and reading all the news has been very disturbing. I have requested the producers of ‘Housefull 4’ to cancel the shoot until further investigation,” Akshay tweeted on Friday morning.

“This is something that requires stringent action. I will not work with any proven offenders and all those who have been subjugated to harassment should be heard and given the justice they deserve,” added the actor, who came back from Italy on Thursday night.

The statement comes after grave allegations against Sajid, who has been helming the fourth film in Sajid Nadiadwala’s comedy franchise, surfaced on the internet.

Sajid has been named by multiple women, including two actresses — Sonali Chopra and Rachel White — and one journalist for sexual misconduct.

Nana, who is a cast member of the film, has been accused of sexually harassing actress Tanushree Dutta on the sets of a 2008 film “Horn Ok Pleassss”.

Akshay’s wife and producer Twinkle Khanna also urged everyone involved with the film to take a stand.

“Appalled hearing multiple incidents of harassment and it is truly horrific to hear what these women have been through. Everyone involved in ‘Housefull’ needs to take a firm stance on this issue. This cannot go on,” she posted on Twitter.

“Housefull 4” also stars Bobby Deol, Riteish Deshmukh, and Kriti Kharbanda.
