Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

On the occasion of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), Chennai, is urging men, particularly those in the higher-risk age groups, to pay greater attention to prostate health, prostate cancer and seek timely medical evaluation rather than waiting for symptoms to become pronounced. While prostate cancer may not always cause noticeable symptoms in its early stages, changes in urination, difficulty starting or maintaining urine flow, increased frequency of urination, blood in the urine or semen, or persistent bone or back pain should not be ignored. Importantly, urinary symptoms can also result from non-cancerous prostate conditions, making appropriate medical evaluation essential. Speaking at the session, Dr. Arun Kumar Balakrishnan, Chief Uro-Oncologist, Kidney Transplant & Robotic Surgeon, Managing Director, AINU, said, ““Prostate cancer can develop silently, and the absence of urinary symptoms does not necessarily mean that there is no underlying disease. Men should become more comfortable discussing prostate health with their doctors, particularly as they grow older or if they have a family history of prostate cancer. Awareness and timely evaluation can help identify men who may require further investigation.”.” Mr. Karthik Kumar, Renowned Actorsaid, “Prostate health is an important part of men’s overall well-being, yet it is often overlooked until symptoms become difficult to ignore. Awareness and timely medical evaluation can make a meaningful difference, particularly as men grow older. Let us make regular health conversations and early evaluation a part of responsible self-care.” Early attention can make a difference When prostate cancer is suspected, doctors may use a combination of clinical assessment, PSA testing, digital rectal examination, imaging such as multiparametric MRI and, when indicated, biopsy to establish a diagnosis. The diagnostic pathway is increasingly personalised according to a man's age, risk factors, PSA levels and other clinical findings.Treatment decisions also depend on the cancer's risk category, stage and the individual's overall health and preferences. Depending on the disease characteristics, management can range from active surveillance for selected lower-risk cancers to surgery, radiation therapy and systemic treatments for cancers requiring active intervention As part of the initiative, AINU Chennai has introduced “Mr. Prostate – EnnamamaKannu, Sowkiyama?”, an awareness campaign designed to make conversations around prostate health more relatable and encourage men to pay attention to their health even in the absence of noticeable symptoms.The campaign highlights an important message: prostate cancer can develop without noticeable symptoms, and men should not necessarily wait for urinary symptoms before discussing prostate health with a doctor. As part of its awareness initiative, AINU is encouraging men aged 40 years and above to consider a proactive prostate health evaluation in consultation with a healthcare professional. To support early evaluation and awareness, AINU Chennai is organising a FREE Prostate Health Check-up Camp from September 24 to 30, 2026. Free Prostate Health Check-up Camp – Screening Includes: • PSA Test • Uroflowmetry • Ultrasound • CUE (Complete Urine Examination) • Doctor Consultation The initiative is aimed at encouraging men to move beyond waiting for symptoms and instead make prostate health a part of their regular healthcare conversations.
