37,000-Year-Old Bamboo Fossil Found in Manipur

Scientists have found a 37,000-year-old bamboo fossil in Manipur’s Imphal
Valley that could change what we know about Asia’s plant history and the Ice Age.

The fossil bamboo stem was discovered in the silt deposits of the Chirang River.
It still shows marks of thorns, which were an early way for bamboo to protect
itself from animals.

This is Asia’s oldest known thorny bamboo fossil and shows that bamboo survived
in the region during the Ice Age.
