Dogs come in many shapes and sizes — from tiny Pomeranians to huge Saint
Bernards. People often think this variety began with Victorian dog breeders.
But a study of more than 600 ancient and modern dog and wolf skulls shows
that much of today’s dog diversity actually started thousands of years ago.
Another study, looking at ancient dog DNA from central and eastern Eurasia,
also gives clues about where dogs came from. However, researchers still don’t
know exactly when, where, or why wolves were first domesticated into dogs.
