DOT School of Design Launches Japanese Language Course to Prepare Designers for Global Careers

DOT School of Design, affiliated with Alagappa University, Karaikudi, launched a Japanese Language Course in collaboration with Zing Languages, strengthening its vision of preparing Indian designers for global careers. The course was launched atthe DOT School of Design campus in Chennai in the presence of Prof. Ranganathan, Guest of Honour and Honorary Consul, Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and Shri B. Ilangovan, Financial Advisor & CFO, Ministry of Railways.

The initiative marks an important extension of DOT’s Global Design Programme, which currently has more than 25 students and is designed to develop designers who are equipped to work not only in India but also in international markets. The programme brings together B.Des and M.Des education, international exposure and global career orientation, including an international study trip.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. AR R Raammnath, Chairman, DOT School of Design, said, “At DOT, we believe the designer of tomorrow must be globally employable. Design skills are increasingly universal, but the ability to communicate in the language of the market in which one works can make a significant difference. Japanese is our first step towards creating designers from Chennai who are equipped to explore professional opportunities in Japan and other global markets”.

Elaborating on the choice of Japanese, he explained, “Japan offers an exciting international pathway for our students, where the combination of strong design capabilities, technical and creative expertise, and Japanese-language proficiency can open new avenues for global careers. Our collaboration with the Japanese Industrial Design Association (JIDA), with its 70-plus-year legacy, further strengthens this vision by recognising the potential for professionally skilled designers who can also communicate effectively in Japanese.”

“This initiative also aligns with the growing India–Japan focus on talent and human- resource exchange, including the 2025 India–Japan Action Plan, which seeks to expand the movement of skilled talent between the two countries while encouraging Japanese-language education in India and stronger connections between Japanese companies and Indian students. At DOT, we want our students to go beyond learning design—we want to equip them with the skills, language and global exposure to take their design careers to the world,” he added.

Japanese Language Training to Build Global Career Readiness

Under the initiative, Japanese will initially be taught to DOT students at JLPT N5 and N4 levels through Zing Languages. Students aspiring to pursue professional opportunities in Japan will subsequently have the opportunity to progress to N3, N2 and N1 levels, representing advanced stages of Japanese-language proficiency. The course has been introduced not only for students enrolled in the Global Design Programme but also for the entire DOT student community, creating wider awareness of the career opportunities that can emerge when design expertise is combined with international language proficiency.

Zing Languages will provide specialised faculty, structured instruction, practical communication and real-time language practice, enabling students to develop a strong foundation in Japanese alongside their design education. The launch reinforces DOT School of Design’s larger vision of creating industry- ready, globally competitive designers by combining professional design education with international exposure, language skills and an understanding of global work environments. The Japanese language initiative is expected to provide students with an additional pathway to explore opportunities in Japan while strengthening their ability to engage with international design ecosystems.
