“Earthquakes Shake Antarctica’s Doomsday Glacier”

Deep under the ice of Antarctica, hundreds of unusual earthquakes have been quietly shaking one of the world’s most dangerous glaciers.

Between 2010 and 2023, scientists recorded more than 360 low-frequency tremors near the Thwaites Glacier. This glacier is often called the Doomsday Glacier because its collapse could significantly raise global sea levels.

A new study published in Geophysical Research Letters suggests that these earthquakes are caused by massive icebergs breaking off from the glacier. As these icebergs tip over and crash into the ocean, they create powerful tremors that shake the ice and the surrounding area.

The research helps scientists understand the dynamic and dangerous behavior of Thwaites Glacier. Studying these tremors is important because it can give early warning signs of major ice loss, which could have serious consequences for coastlines and communities around the world.
