From Government School to Tata Chairman: N Chandrasekaran’s Journey

Natarajan Chandrasekaran is set to step down as the Chairman of Tata Sons after nearly four decades of service to the Tata Group. His decision comes ahead of the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on August 18, although his current term was originally expected to continue until February 2027.

Chandrasekaran has decided not to seek another term after completing his current tenure. His departure marks the end of a long journey with one of India’s most respected business groups.

Four Decades With Tata Group

Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Group nearly 40 years ago and gradually moved through different leadership positions.

During his career, he became one of the most important leaders in the group. He served as the CEO and Managing Director of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) before becoming Chairman of Tata Sons.

He has led Tata Sons for around a decade and played an important role in guiding the group through major business and economic changes.

Reflecting on his career, Chandrasekaran said that spending 40 years with the Tata Group had been a fulfilling experience. He described leading Tata Sons as both an honour and a major responsibility.

A Journey From Tamil Nadu

Chandrasekaran’s personal journey is also notable because he came from a modest background in Tamil Nadu.

He grew up in Mohanur village and studied at a Tamil-medium government school. During his school years, he reportedly walked more than three kilometres every day to attend classes.

Despite coming from a simple background, he remained focused on his education and career.

After completing his school education, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Sciences from Coimbatore Institute of Technology.

He later completed a Master of Computer Applications (MCA) from the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli.

From Technology to Business Leadership

Chandrasekaran began his professional career in the technology sector and eventually became one of India’s leading corporate executives.

His rise through TCS was a major part of his career. Under his leadership, TCS expanded its global presence and became one of India’s most important technology companies.

His success at TCS eventually led to his appointment as Chairman of Tata Sons.

End of an Important Chapter

Chandrasekaran’s decision to step down represents an important moment for the Tata Group. During his leadership, the group continued to expand across technology, automobiles, consumer businesses, infrastructure, and other industries.

The transition will also bring attention to the question of who will lead Tata Sons in the next phase.

For Chandrasekaran, the end of his tenure marks the conclusion of an extraordinary professional journey that began in a small village in Tamil Nadu and eventually took him to the leadership of one of India’s most respected business groups.

His story is often seen as an example of how education, determination, discipline, and hard work can help a person achieve remarkable success despite humble beginnings
