After nearly 20 years, Chris Carter is finally releasing his long-awaited X-Files movie. Originally titled The X-Files: I Want to Believe, the film will now be called The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn. Carter has recut the movie to match the vision he had when he first imagined it. This version leans more into the standalone mystery and gives it a modern twist, inspired by the story of Dr. Frankenstein.
When the original film was released in 2008, studio executives wanted to tone down the horror elements to get a PG-13 rating. Now, Carter has brought back those scarier parts, making the movie darker and more thrilling. He explained that this new version is actually shorter than the original but hopes it will appeal to both fans and a wider audience.
Carter has revisited The X-Files before. In 2016 and 2018, the series was revived for two seasons, which are considered part of the show’s official canon. These seasons starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Carter is still open to continuing the story but says it depends on how Ryan Coogler approaches his upcoming X-Files project for Hulu.
Carter also shared some behind-the-scenes stories, including his challenges with studio executives in the past and his thoughts on UFO-related hearings in Congress. He remains deeply connected to his fans, who have always been vocal about their love for the series.
