Movie Theater Owners Change Mind on Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger

Cinema United, an organization that represents movie theater owners, has changed its position on the proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery.

Earlier, Cinema United supported a legal challenge brought by 12 US state attorneys general. The group had backed efforts to stop the merger, raising concerns about the possible impact of combining two major entertainment companies.

The legal challenge includes California Attorney General Rob Bonta. The states have argued that the proposed deal needs careful review because of its possible effects on competition in the entertainment and movie industry.

However, Cinema United has now changed its approach. In a letter sent on Tuesday, the organization called for immediate talks between Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison and Bonta.

The group wants the two sides to explore a possible settlement instead of continuing the legal fight. A settlement could allow the companies and the states to reach an agreement on conditions that may address concerns about the merger.

The change in position is important because Cinema United represents many movie theater owners. The organization has a strong interest in how major studio deals could affect cinemas, movie releases and the wider film business.

The proposed merger would bring Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery closer together and could create one of the biggest companies in the entertainment industry. Both companies have major film studios, television networks and streaming businesses.

Supporters of the deal may argue that a larger company could compete more effectively in the global entertainment market. However, opponents are concerned that the merger could reduce competition and give the combined company greater influence over movies, television and streaming content.

For now, the legal case remains an important part of the merger process. Cinema United’s latest move could encourage both sides to discuss possible solutions rather than continuing the dispute in court.

The proposed talks between Ellison and Bonta could help determine whether an agreement can be reached. If the two sides find common ground, it could change the future of the merger and reduce some of the legal concerns surrounding the deal.

The situation is still developing, and the final outcome will depend on negotiations, regulatory decisions and the ongoing legal process.
