Spain’s FIFA World Cup-winning captain Rodri has officially joined La Liga champions Barcelona from Premier League club Manchester City. This move comes after Barcelona made multiple attempts to sign him, with the deal finally being finalized on Sunday. According to reports, the transfer could be worth up to 76.5 million euros ($88.6 million), including bonuses. Rodri expressed his excitement about joining Barcelona during his official unveiling on Tuesday, calling it a fresh challenge and a chance to experience new opportunities.
Rodri spent seven successful seasons at Manchester City, winning multiple trophies, including the Champions League in 2023. However, he was reportedly close to joining Real Madrid before deciding to join Barcelona instead. Despite struggling with injuries in recent years, Rodri played a key role in Spain’s victory at the World Cup in North America last month.
Barcelona has dominated La Liga in recent seasons but has not won the Champions League since 2015. Rodri is determined to help the club achieve its goals this season and described Hansi Flick, Barcelona’s new coach, as someone who will bring a fresh style of play that will benefit his career.
Rodri will now train with his new teammates, including familiar faces from Spain’s Euro 2024 and World Cup squads, such as Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Dani Olmo. He will also join Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, who recently joined the club.
Rodri expressed gratitude for his time at Manchester City, where he won 12 major trophies under manager Pep Guardiola. He described his departure as bittersweet, leaving with pride for what he and the team achieved together.
Barcelona will kick off their La Liga defense on Sunday against Elche.
