157 Candidates Face Serious Criminal Charges Report

In Chennai, an analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms has found that 157 candidates from major political parties have declared serious criminal cases against them. These cases include murder, attempt to murder, crimes against women and children, and corruption.

The report says that many of these cases are still pending in court. It also points out that even if these candidates win the election, they could face trouble later. This is because some of the charges carry punishment of five years or more, which may lead to loss of their MLA posts if they are convicted.

Among the parties, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has fielded the highest number of such candidates. According to the report, 60 of its 170 candidates have serious criminal cases pending. This means about 35% of its candidates are facing such charges.

The ADR report highlights concerns about the background of candidates contesting elections. It suggests that voters should be aware of these details before making their choice.

The findings have once again raised questions about the need for cleaner politics and stronger checks on candidates with criminal cases.
