Afghanistan Cricketer Shapoor Zadran Battles Critical Illness in Delhi

Former Afghanistan cricketer Shapoor Zadran is critically ill in a hospital in New Delhi. He is fighting Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a severe disease where the immune system fails. Shapoor has been in treatment since January for an advanced stage of this condition.

Shapoor, who played 80 international matches for Afghanistan between 2009 and 2020, first felt unwell last October. His younger brother Ghamai helped him travel to India for better care. With the help of Afghan cricket team captain Rashid Khan and Cricket Board chairman Mirwais Ashraf, Shapoor received an expedited visa to come to India.

Upon arrival in January, Shapoor was hospitalized. He faced severe infections, including tuberculosis and dengue, which spread to his brain. His condition improved briefly but worsened again due to recurring infections.

Recent tests showed he is in Stage Four of HLH. However, recent steroid treatment has given hope for improvement. Ghamai remains optimistic about Shapoor’s recovery.
