Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have appointed former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Zaheer will take over from Stephen Fleming, ending the New Zealand coach’s long association with the five-time IPL champions.
Fleming had been associated with CSK since 2008 and became the team’s head coach in 2009. He guided the franchise to five IPL titles and remained in the role for 18 years before leaving after the 2026 season. Fleming has since taken charge as England’s Test head coach.
Zaheer’s appointment marks his first head-coaching role with an IPL franchise. However, he already has considerable experience in team management and player development. He previously worked with Mumbai Indians in senior cricket-management and development roles and later served as a mentor for Lucknow Super Giants.
As a player, Zaheer was one of India’s leading fast bowlers. He represented India in 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is. He was also India’s leading wicket-taker during the 2011 World Cup-winning campaign, taking 21 wickets in the tournament.
Zaheer also played 100 IPL matches during his career and took 102 wickets. His experience of working with different teams and young players is expected to be an important part of his new role at CSK.
The decision to appoint an Indian coach comes as CSK begins a new phase following Fleming’s departure. Reports said the franchise considered several candidates before selecting Zaheer, with MS Dhoni, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and other members of the management involved in discussions over the appointment.
CSK officially announced the appointment on social media with the message, “Left Arm ‘Taking’ Over!” Zaheer also said he was honoured to join one of the most successful teams in IPL history and looked forward to experiencing the atmosphere created by CSK supporters at Chepauk.
The appointment comes after CSK finished the 2026 IPL season at the bottom of the points table and missed the playoffs. Zaheer will now have the task of working with the coaching staff and players as the franchise prepares for the 2027 season.
With Zaheer taking over from a coach who spent nearly two decades with the franchise, CSK are entering a new coaching era. His international experience, knowledge of fast bowling and background in player development will form an important part of the team’s preparations for IPL 2027.
