Chinese President Xi Jinping has concluded his three-day state visit to Washington after holding talks with US President Donald Trump on trade, artificial intelligence and several major foreign policy issues. The visit highlighted efforts by the two countries to maintain dialogue, but it did not result in any major new agreements.
A key outcome of the discussions was progress towards extending the existing US-China trade truce for another two months. The extension would keep the current arrangement in place until January while officials from both countries continue negotiations on trade and economic issues.
Trump and Xi also placed emphasis on their personal relationship. Both leaders described their communication and relationship as important to maintaining cooperation between the United States and China. Xi announced plans to meet Trump twice more before the end of the year, potentially giving the two leaders additional opportunities to discuss areas of disagreement.
Artificial intelligence was another important subject during the talks. The two sides discussed the need to ensure that increasingly powerful AI systems remain under human control. The United States has also proposed creating a mechanism through which Washington and Beijing could alert each other about serious AI-related incidents that could have national security consequences.
Despite the discussions, no major new AI agreement was signed during Xi’s visit. The issue remains sensitive because both countries are competing in areas such as advanced computing, semiconductors and AI development while also trying to manage the security risks associated with the technology.
The leaders also discussed international security issues, including the conflict involving Iran and tensions surrounding Taiwan. However, the talks did not produce major breakthroughs on either issue. Taiwan remains one of the most sensitive subjects in US-China relations, with Beijing maintaining its position on Taiwan and Washington continuing its long-standing policy toward the island.
Trump repeatedly highlighted his relationship with Xi during the visit, describing it as “truly great” and presenting direct communication between the two leaders as an important part of managing disagreements between their countries.
The visit also drew criticism from some observers who argued that it produced limited concrete results. They pointed to the absence of major new agreements and said the trip placed considerable attention on ceremonial events and personal diplomacy rather than substantial policy outcomes.
Even without major breakthroughs, the continuation of high-level talks gives both countries more time to negotiate on trade and other areas of disagreement. The planned meetings between Trump and Xi later this year could provide further opportunities to address unresolved economic, technological and foreign policy issues.
