A hamlet in Virudhunagar district is set to receive a new name after residents raised concerns about its existing name for several years. The hamlet, currently known as Paraicheri, is located in Achamthavizhtthan village in Srivilliputhur taluk.
Residents have been seeking a name change because the existing name is associated with a particular caste group. They have argued that continuing to use such a name gives the hamlet a caste-based identity and does not reflect how the community wants the area to be identified.
The issue has remained a concern for local residents for a long period. Although the hamlet has been commonly known by the existing name, residents have repeatedly requested that the authorities consider changing it.
The matter gained wider attention after South First reported on the residents’ demand. Following the report, efforts to address the issue and begin the renaming process gathered momentum.
The old name has also been used in official records for many years. Changing the name will therefore require the authorities to complete the necessary administrative procedures and update relevant government records.
A new name is expected to be announced soon. Once the name is finalised, the formal process of changing it in official documents and records will begin.
For local residents, the proposed change is more than an administrative exercise. They see it as an opportunity to move away from a caste-based identity associated with the hamlet and adopt a name that represents the community as a whole.
