Congress Signals Openness to TVK Talks

K.C. Venugopal, a senior leader of the Indian National Congress, has indicated that Congress may be open to discussions with C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) after the party’s strong performance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

TVK made a major political debut by winning 108 seats, emerging as the single-largest party in the Assembly. However, the party narrowly missed securing a full majority needed to form the government on its own.

Speaking to reporters in Alappuzha on May 5, 2026, Venugopal said that Congress had contested the election as part of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance.

At the same time, he acknowledged that the election results have created a “new situation” in Tamil Nadu politics. He said Congress would carefully assess the changing political landscape before making future decisions.

Venugopal’s remarks suggest that Congress may consider new political strategies, including possible talks or alliances, depending on how government formation efforts unfold.

This statement is significant because TVK’s emergence has reshaped Tamil Nadu politics, forcing traditional parties to reconsider their positions and alliance strategies.

As coalition discussions continue, Congress’s next move could play an important role in determining who ultimately forms the next government in Tamil Nadu.
