Farmers from Parandur Meet Tamil Nadu CM Vijay, Thank Him for Scrapping Airport Project
Members of the Parandur Greenfield Airport Opposition Joint Movement met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat in Chennai on Tuesday (August 25, 2026). They thanked him for announcing the government’s decision to cancel the Parandur Greenfield Airport project in the Assembly.
The delegation, led by G. Subramanian (president) and S.T. Kadhiresan (secretary), also included other members of the movement. They met Mr. Vijay along with Ministers N. Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, R. Nirmalkumar, and K. Thennarasu. After the meeting, Subramanian spoke to reporters and shared details about their five-year-long protest against the airport project.
The villagers had previously approached then Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and officials during the DMK regime, presenting documents highlighting unsuitable geographical conditions for the project. Despite these efforts, land acquisition began.
Subramanian explained that the project would have destroyed thousands of acres of farmland, wetlands, and the 1,110-year-old Kamban Canal. This would have ruined the livelihoods of local farmers. He noted that Mr. Vijay had promised to cancel the project if his party came to power during his meeting with villagers in January last year as TVK president.
The Chief Minister kept his promise, leading to the scrapping of the project. Subramanian expressed gratitude for safeguarding the farmers’ livelihoods and mentioned that villagers from Ekanapuram plan to name a lane “C. Joseph Vijay Road” as a gesture of thanks. He also pointed out that the DMK is spreading false claims about severe economic repercussions due to the project’s cancellation.
