Why Was Prabath Jayasuriya Punished in the India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test?
Prabath Jayasuriya, a Sri Lankan cricketer, was recently punished by the International Cricket Council (ICC) during the second Test match between India and Sri Lanka. He became the third player to face action in this series after breaching the ICC Code of Conduct.
Jayasuriya received a reprimand and one demerit point for his actions. This is the first time he has been penalized in two years. The incident happened on the second day of the Test when he struck the boundary wedges with his bat after being dismissed. He was caught by the umpires, including third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella.
The punishment came after Jayasuriya admitted to the offence, so no formal hearing was needed. He violated Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which prohibits abusing cricket equipment during matches.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s batting struggled on day three, with Pasindu Sooriyabandara scoring 80 runs but others failing to support him. Niroshan Dickwella was dismissed for a duck, and Sonal Dinusha, who had previously scored a century, found himself alone at the crease as wickets fell around him.
India, led by centuries from Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel in their first innings, remained strong at 503/9 declared. Sri Lanka was reduced to 240/8 after tea on day three. India currently leads the two-match series 1-0 following their win in the first Test by 165 runs.
