Gill Says Gujarat Titans Struggled in Middle Overs Against Mumbai Indians

Ahmedabad (Gujarat), April 20 (ANI): Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill admitted his team gave away too many runs in the middle overs during their heavy 99-run loss to Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Despite knowing the pitch well, GT failed to execute their plans effectively.

Gill pointed out that 160-170 would have been a competitive score on the wicket but said his team fell short of restricting MI to such a total. He called the defeat a learning opportunity for the upcoming matches.

The loss was GT’s biggest margin in IPL history, surpassing their previous worst defeats against Chennai Super Kings. Gill described it as a small setback and expressed hope that the team would bounce back soon.

He also highlighted inconsistent bowling, especially in the middle overs, where GT struggled to maintain pressure on MI batters. The wicket was slower than expected, and bowlers found it hard to hit the right areas consistently.

When asked if conditions changed during their innings, Gill noted the pitch stayed mostly the same but became slightly easier due to dew.

MI delivered a strong all-round performance, with Tilak Varma scoring an unbeaten century (101 off 45 balls) and their bowlers taking crucial wickets. GT’s batting collapsed early, losing Sai Sudharsan for a golden duck and slipping to 45/3 in six overs.

The bowlers, including Ashwani Kumar (4/24), Mitchell Santner (2/16), and AM Ghazanfar (2/17), tightened their grip, dismissing GT for 100 runs.

With this win, Mumbai moved to seventh place on the IPL points table with two wins from six matches. Gujarat dropped to sixth with three wins and three losses, struggling with a negative net run rate of -0.821. (ANI)
