Heat and Shortages Drive Up Veggie Prices in Chennai

Rising temperatures in Tamil Nadu and nearby states have started to affect vegetable supply in the markets. Because of the heat, fewer vegetables are being grown and harvested. This has made vegetables harder to find and more expensive for people.

In many parts of northern Tamil Nadu, the weather continues to stay very hot. This is affecting both farmers and crops. However, some southern districts of the state may receive rainfall until the weekend. This rain could bring some relief to farmers and slightly improve farming conditions.

At the same time, long periods of dry weather in major farming regions of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have caused more problems. These two states supply a large share of vegetables to big markets, including the Koyambedu Market, one of Asia’s largest wholesale markets for perishable goods.

Because of poor rainfall and dry conditions, vegetable production in these regions has gone down. Farmers are struggling to grow enough crops, and the supply of fresh vegetables to markets is reducing.

As a result, demand is higher than supply in many cities. This shortage is pushing vegetable prices up, making daily groceries more expensive for common people. If the hot and dry weather continues, prices may stay high for some more time.
