Israel-Iran Conflict Heats Up: Key Figures Testify in Congress

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth faced tough questions from Democratic lawmakers in a recent congressional hearing. This was the first major hearing since the Trump administration became involved in the ongoing conflict with Iran. Lawmakers questioned the purpose of the war, its high cost, and why it was started without clear approval from Congress.

At the same time, the House Armed Services Committee discussed the proposed military budget for 2027. The plan suggests a record defence spending of about $1.5 trillion, which is one of the highest levels ever proposed.

President Donald Trump has further increased tensions by warning Iran to accept stricter rules on its nuclear program. He said that the United States could continue a naval blockade that is putting pressure on Iran’s economy for several months. Reports also suggest that Iran has offered to reopen the important Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipping, but the situation remains uncertain.

Trump also held a meeting with major oil industry leaders, where he explained that the current pressure strategy on Iran could continue for a longer time. This has raised concerns about global oil supply and prices.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin also expressed concern over the situation. During a phone call with US leadership, he warned that further military action in Iran could have serious consequences. According to Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov, Putin said that any escalation could badly affect not only Iran, but also nearby countries and the wider world.

Overall, the situation remains tense, with global leaders divided over how to handle the growing conflict.
