External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where world leaders and representatives are discussing major global challenges and ways to strengthen international cooperation.
The 81st session is being held under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” The theme focuses on rebuilding confidence in multilateral institutions and ensuring that the United Nations remains effective in responding to changing global challenges.
The UN General Assembly brings together representatives from all 193 member states. The annual session provides countries with an opportunity to present their priorities, exchange views and discuss issues affecting international peace, security and development.
This year’s discussions are taking place against the backdrop of several global challenges, including conflicts, humanitarian crises, economic pressures, climate change and growing concerns about international security. Member states are also focusing on cooperation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
The session places emphasis on the principles of peace, dignity and equality. Countries are expected to discuss ways to strengthen international cooperation and address challenges that affect people across different regions.
Jaishankar’s address will present India’s views on key international issues and highlight the country’s approach to multilateral cooperation. India has consistently called for stronger representation of developing countries in global institutions and greater cooperation on issues affecting the Global South.
The Indian delegation is also expected to use the UNGA meetings to engage with representatives from several countries on bilateral and regional issues. Jaishankar has been holding meetings with foreign ministers and other international leaders during his visit to New York.
The 81st UN General Assembly is therefore an important platform for countries to discuss how international institutions can respond to a rapidly changing world. The session will continue discussions on strengthening cooperation and ensuring that the United Nations can address global challenges effectively.
