Joao Cancelo Joins Barcelona Permanently After Al-Hilal Exit

Joao Cancelo has officially joined Barcelona permanently after leaving Al-Hilal. The 32-year-old Portuguese defender completed a free transfer to the Catalan club this week. He signed a three-year contract that keeps him at Camp Nou until June 2029.

Cancelo expressed his joy about returning to Barcelona, stating it’s been his lifelong dream. He feels connected to the club and promises to give his best for the team.

The full-back had previously joined Barcelona on loan twice: once in the 2023-24 season and again in January 2025 under managers Xavi Hernandez and Hansi Flick. During these spells, he played a total of 65 matches, scoring eight goals and assisting nine times. His strong performances convinced the club to pursue a permanent deal.

Cancelo began his career in Portugal with Benfica before moving to Spain’s Valencia in 2015. He has since had short loan spells and permanent moves across Europe, including stops at Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich. His third spell at Barcelona is unique as it has no expiration date.

A regular for Portugal’s national team, Cancelo has earned 73 caps since debuting in 2016. He was part of the squad that won the 2018-19 Nations League and has played in two World Cups and one European Championship.

Barcelona has made several moves this transfer window, including signing midfielder Rodri from Manchester City for £65 million. They’ve also added wingers Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi while losing Ferran Torres to Paris Saint-Germain and Robert Lewandowski to MLS.

With Cancelo’s attacking skills and experience, Hansi Flick now has a reliable option in defense. The versatile full-back adds depth and leadership to the team.
