Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has explained the recent increase in milk prices, which has raised the cost by ₹8 per litre. He said the decision was taken due to drought conditions and increasing expenses faced by the dairy sector.
According to Shivakumar, drought has created difficulties for dairy farmers and affected their ability to maintain milk production. At the same time, the cost of managing dairy farms and maintaining cattle has increased, putting additional financial pressure on farmers.
He stated that the price adjustment was necessary to provide better financial support to dairy farmers and protect their livelihoods. The government aims to ensure that farmers receive adequate returns for their work while helping the dairy sector continue its operations during difficult conditions.
The price increase has also raised concerns among consumers, as milk is an essential part of many households’ daily needs. Nandini, Karnataka’s well-known dairy brand, supplies a range of milk and dairy products to consumers across the state.
Shivakumar said efforts are being made to keep Nandini products relatively affordable while addressing the financial difficulties faced by dairy farmers and workers.
The price revision has brought attention to the challenge of balancing farmers’ income with the cost of living for consumers. The government faces the task of supporting the dairy industry while ensuring that milk and other dairy products remain accessible to the public.
