The Supreme Court on September 1, 2026, ordered that all FIRs filed against NEET-UG protesters between July 20 and July 25 be dismissed under Article 142 of the Constitution.
During a hearing, Delhi Police sought permission to use special powers under Article 142. However, Saurav Das from Cockroach Janta Party informed the court that his party had decided to cancel its planned September 5 protest after receiving assurances from the government about withdrawing FIRs and providing compensation to victims.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued before the bench that the Centre was committed to honoring these assurances, including paying compensation to families of students who died due to the NEET exam cancellation. He requested three months to finalize the details for this compensation.
The court agreed to dismiss all FIRs related to the protests and instructed that no new FIRs should be filed regarding incidents between July 20 and July 25 in any state or union territory. However, Delhi Police was allowed to file fresh FIRs against 28 individuals without affecting their rights.
The Supreme Court also asked the Centre to create a compensation scheme for protestors injured during police action. This scheme will be implemented by states as a standard procedure in such cases.
Additionally, the Centre is required to pay compensation to affected families within three months. Earlier, the court had set up an enquiry committee led by Justice R. Subhash Reddy to investigate issues and allegations related to the protests and any police actions during this period.
