The Pakistan cricket team has faced a wave of online ridicule after making significant changes to their squad during their England tour. Following two consecutive Test losses against England, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) replaced seven players and two members of the coaching staff ahead of the final Test, which began on September 9.
Criticism poured in from former cricketers and commentators. Kevin Pietersen, a retired England captain, humorously suggested that Babar Azam, Pakistan’s skipper, might face an unusually long pre-match interview due to the frequent changes in the team lineup. Pietersen’s comment was lighthearted but highlighted the PCB’s decision to replace several players, including Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, and others.
Among the replacements were five uncapped players and two capped ones. Notable among them were Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, who had limited Test experience, and Arafat Minhas, a left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder yet to debut in Tests. The PCB also brought in new coaches, Mike Hesson and Ashley Noffke, replacing Sarfaraz Ahmed and Umar Gul.
The criticism wasn’t just from abroad. Ramiz Raja, Pakistan’s former captain and now a prominent commentator, harshly criticized the PCB for making such drastic changes midway through the Test series against England. He called it “unprecedented” and compared it to sacking a football manager mid-season, expressing frustration over what he saw as poor decision-making under pressure.
The controversy has cast doubt on the PCB’s strategy, with many questioning whether these changes will help Pakistan secure a better performance in their remaining matches.
