Rahul Gandhi Promises Gig Worker Welfare Legislation in Telangana

During a campaign in Telangana, Rahul Gandhi, a leader of the Indian National Congress, assured Gig workers that if the party is elected to power in the state, it will consider enacting legislation for their welfare, similar to the law recently passed in Rajasthan.

Gandhi interacted with Gig workers, autorickshaw drivers, and sanitary workers in the Jubilee Hills constituency, promising that the chief minister and relevant ministers would convene a meeting to determine welfare measures for these workers after the elections.

He highlighted the Rajasthan law, where companies deposit funds for social security measures like pension and insurance for each order. Gandhi expressed concern about the challenges faced by Gig workers and suggested the creation of a welfare board to address their issues. The workers conveyed problems such as decreasing earnings per order, rising expenses, and inadequate insurance coverage. Gandhi referred to these challenges as “21st-century slavery.”
