Rinku Singh has emerged as a strong contender for Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) captaincy role in the Indian Premier League (IPL), following Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement. The 28-year-old from Aligarh led Meerut Mavericks to victory in the UP T20 League 2026, defeating Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Lucknow Falcons by a significant margin of 94 runs in the final.
This marks Meerut Mavericks’ third consecutive title win under Rinku’s leadership. Although it was his first time captaining the franchise, Rinku showcased remarkable leadership skills during the tournament. He guided the team to nine wins out of ten matches played.
Rinku’s opportunity to focus on his leadership abilities came after he missed out on representing India in the T20I series against Afghanistan. His performance in the UP T20 League has now earned him recognition from former India cricketer Suresh Raina, who urged KKR to consider him for the captaincy.
Raina praised Rinku’s consistency and ability to lead effectively. He suggested that KKR should give Rinku more opportunities to prove himself ahead of the IPL season. While Hardik Pandya remains a potential candidate for the role, no official decision has been made yet.
Rinku’s leadership and success in the UP T20 League have solidified his position as a strong contender for KKR’s captaincy. With Raina’s endorsement, he is now seen as a key player in the franchise’s future plans.
