Tamil Nadu has witnessed a major political transformation in the 2026 Assembly election, as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-politician Vijay, emerged as a powerful new force in state politics.
For decades, Tamil Nadu politics was mainly dominated by the two major Dravidian parties — Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Elections were usually seen as a direct contest between these two parties.
However, the 2026 election changed this long-standing pattern.
TVK secured around 35% vote share and won 108 Assembly seats, becoming the single largest party in Tamil Nadu. This marks the first time since 1967 that a third political force, outside DMK and AIADMK, has risen to such a dominant position in the state.
Despite this historic success, TVK still fell short of the majority mark needed to form the government on its own.
To strengthen its numbers, TVK received support from Indian National Congress and left parties, which together increased its total support to 116 seats. However, this still leaves the party short of the required majority.
Now, all eyes are on Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), whose support could play a crucial role in deciding whether TVK can successfully form the next government.
Reports suggest that VCK is seeking a share in governance, including possible ministerial roles, which has created uncertainty in the negotiations.
If VCK support does not materialize and no stable alliance is formed, political uncertainty could deepen, raising concerns about the possibility of Governor’s rule in Tamil Nadu until a workable government is established.
The current situation has created intense political drama, with coalition talks, power-sharing discussions, and strategic calculations shaping the state’s future.
This election is already being seen as a historic turning point, as Vijay’s TVK has successfully broken Tamil Nadu’s traditional two-party political system and opened a new chapter in the state’s political history.
