TVK Breaks Tamil Nadu’s Political Tradition

Tamil Nadu politics has witnessed a major historic shift in the 2026 Assembly election, as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Vijay, broke the long-standing dominance of the two major Dravidian parties — Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
For decades, Tamil Nadu’s political landscape was largely shaped by direct competition between DMK and AIADMK. But this election created a new chapter, with TVK emerging as a powerful third force.
In the 2026 election, TVK secured an impressive 35% vote share and won 108 Assembly seats, making it the single largest party in the state. This is considered a historic achievement because, for the first time since 1967, a party other than DMK or AIADMK has emerged as the primary political force in Tamil Nadu.
Although TVK did not secure a full majority on its own, its performance has significantly altered the state’s political balance and triggered intense discussions about possible coalition governments.
Amid this changing political environment, reports emerged in sections of the media about possible alliance discussions involving DMK and AIADMK. Responding to these reports, CPI state secretary Veerapandian addressed questions regarding such speculation.
His comments have further added to the political excitement, as parties continue to explore options in the post-election scenario.
The rise of TVK has clearly transformed Tamil Nadu politics, ending the traditional two-party dominance and creating a new era of coalition calculations, strategic negotiations, and shifting power equations. This election may well be remembered as one of the most significant turning points in the state’s political history.
