CHENNAI: The political race to form the new government in Tamil Nadu became extremely close on Friday evening, with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) moving very near to securing a majority in the Assembly.
TVK president Vijay appeared to be just a step away from becoming Chief Minister after two left parties extended their support. The Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), both with two MLAs each, officially backed TVK’s bid to form the government.
With this support, TVK’s strength reached 117 MLAs in the 234-member Assembly. The magic number needed for a majority is 118. This means the party was still one seat short of forming the government on its own.
The last remaining hope for TVK was the support of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which had not yet submitted its formal letter of support at that time.
Later, VCK spokesperson K K Pavalan posted in a media group that the party’s MLAs would send their letters of support to TVK on Saturday. An official statement from VCK also indicated that its leader Thol Thirumavalavan would take a final decision soon.
However, until the official letters were submitted, uncertainty continued. Even late at night, TVK remained one seat short of crossing the majority mark, keeping the political situation tense and unpredictable.
With negotiations still ongoing and final confirmations awaited, the race to form the next government remained open, and all eyes were on VCK’s final decision.
