Alleged Assassination Plot Targeting Costa Rican President
San José, Costa Rica: Costa Rica’s national security chief has revealed details of an alleged plot to assassinate President Rodrigo Chaves, just weeks ahead of the country’s presidential and legislative elections.
Jorge Torres, Director of the Intelligence and National Security Directorate, spoke to journalists on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, about the alleged plot. He said he was preparing to file a formal complaint with the public prosecutor’s office so that the matter could be officially investigated.
Torres did not share full details of the alleged plan but said the information was serious enough to warrant legal action. Authorities are expected to examine the claims carefully, especially given the sensitive timing ahead of the elections.
The revelation has raised concerns about security and political stability in the country. Officials said steps are being taken to ensure the safety of the President and to maintain peace during the election period.
