India’s Basmati Rice Exports to Iran Stall

India’s basmati rice exports to Iran have almost come to a halt, according to a report. The slowdown follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning of a 25 per cent tariff on countries that continue trading with Iran. This has raised serious concerns among Indian rice exporters.

Exporters say the situation has become more difficult because Indian goods already face a 50 per cent tariff from the United States. The threat of additional tariffs has made suppliers cautious about doing business with Iran.

According to a report by Reuters, Indian exporters are worried about the risk of non-payment from Iranian buyers. Because of these financial risks and uncertainty over future trade restrictions, many suppliers are now reluctant to sign new contracts.

Traders said Iran has traditionally been an important market for Indian basmati rice, but the current geopolitical tensions and trade restrictions have made exports risky. As a result, shipments have slowed sharply, affecting both exporters and farmers.

The uncertainty has added pressure on India’s rice export sector, which is already dealing with global trade challenges and rising costs.
