SC Gives MP Two Weeks on Minister Case

The Supreme Court on Monday, January 19, 2026, asked the Madhya Pradesh government to take a decision within two weeks on whether it will allow legal action against State Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah. He is accused of making insulting comments about Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi.

Colonel Qureshi had earlier briefed the media during Operation Sindoor, which brought her national attention. The remarks allegedly made by the Minister against her led to strong public criticism and the filing of a case.

Taking the issue seriously, the Supreme Court expressed concern over the comments. Earlier, the court had ordered the setting up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the allegations against Mr. Shah.

The court has now made it clear that the State government must decide within two weeks whether it will give permission to prosecute the Minister. Such approval is required before any legal proceedings can continue against a sitting minister.

The case has drawn wide attention across the country, with many people demanding accountability and respect for the armed forces.
