Colombo West Terminal Emerges Port’s Most Efficient

In Sri Lanka, the Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT) has become the most efficient terminal at the Port of Colombo in 2025. The terminal is run by a partnership between the Adani Group and John Keells Holdings. In its very first year, it has shown faster growth and better performance than other terminals at the port.

CWIT started operations only in April 2025, but it quickly increased its work speed and handling capacity. Official figures show that by the end of the year, the terminal handled 7,17,226 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units, a standard measure for containers). In comparison, the East Container Terminal (ECT), which is managed by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, handled just over 5,00,000 TEUs during the same period.

The ECT is still working with incomplete facilities and infrastructure, which has slowed down its operations. Because of this, it has not been able to match the performance of CWIT.

Reports also say that CWIT has already used nearly 90 per cent of its Phase 1 capacity, which is 1.6 million TEUs. This shows that the terminal is operating efficiently and handling a large number of containers in a short time.

The strong performance of CWIT is expected to boost trade activities at the Port of Colombo and improve Sri Lanka’s position as an important shipping and logistics hub in the region.
