ECR Beaches See 17 Deaths, Police Strengthen Patrols
Seventeen people have lost their lives on beaches along the East Coast Road (ECR) in just 14 months, prompting the Tambaram city police to strengthen beach safety measures.
Authorities have issued strict warnings to the public not to enter prohibited waters, especially during rough sea conditions. Danger zones along the beaches have been clearly marked to alert visitors and prevent accidents.
According to police records, between January 2025 and February 2026, a total of 17 drowning deaths were reported at popular beaches including Kanathur, Kovalam, Muttukadu, and Uthandi. Most of these incidents occurred when people ignored warnings and ventured into unsafe areas.
The police have increased patrols along the beaches, especially during weekends and holidays when crowds are higher. Lifeguards and safety teams are being deployed at key points to monitor swimmers and provide immediate help in case of emergencies.
Officials are also urging beachgoers to follow safety rules, swim only in designated areas, and pay attention to warning flags and signage. These steps aim to prevent further accidents and ensure that people can enjoy the beaches safely.
The Tambaram police have made it clear that anyone found entering restricted waters may face legal action, highlighting the seriousness of beach safety in the region.
