Metro Ridership Jumps Amid Egmore Work
The recent reduction in suburban train services due to ongoing work at Egmore Railway Station has led to a sharp rise in the number of people using Chennai Metro Rail.
Because several suburban trains were cancelled or rescheduled, many daily passengers looked for other travel options. A large number of them shifted to the Metro for a faster and more reliable journey. As a result, Chennai Metro recorded its highest-ever daily average ridership in February.
In February 2026, the Metro saw an average of 3.44 lakh passengers travelling every day. This is a significant increase compared to February 2025, when the average daily ridership was 3.09 lakh. The rise of 35,000 passengers per day marks an 11% growth in one year.
Officials say the increase clearly shows that more people are choosing Metro services when suburban train services are reduced. The Metro has become an important transport option for office-goers, students, and other daily commuters, especially during infrastructure work at major railway stations.
With work still continuing at Egmore, Metro ridership is expected to remain high in the coming weeks.
