Deve Gowda Hits Back at Kharge Remarks
Former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda has responded sharply to comments made by Mallikarjuna Kharge, using strong words to describe his past alliance with the Congress party.
In an open letter written on the evening of March 18, the Janata Dal (Secular) leader said that his relationship with the Congress was like a “forced marriage.” He added that he had to “divorce” the party because it became an “abusive relationship.” His remarks were a reply to Kharge’s earlier comments, where he questioned Gowda’s current alliance with the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, despite previously having a close relationship, or “mohabbat,” with the Congress.
The exchange began earlier in the day during Kharge’s farewell speech in the Rajya Sabha. Kharge, who is among several members retiring between April and July, spoke about his time as the Leader of Opposition. In his speech, he mentioned Gowda and Sharad Pawar, appreciating their contributions to Parliament.
Gowda’s response highlights the growing political differences and tensions between leaders, especially as alliances continue to shift in Indian politics.
