Why injury-plagued KKR’s bowling line-up a boon for Umran Malik in IPL 2026?

Umran Malik, who has been out of action due to injuries for most of the last three years, now sees a big opportunity with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the IPL 2026. This comes because KKR’s bowling attack is struggling with several injuries.

KKR have lost key bowlers like Harshit Rana and Akash Deep to injuries, while Sri Lankan player Matheesha Pathirana is recovering from an injury suffered during the T20 World Cup. Additionally, Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman is unavailable due to diplomatic issues. This leaves KKR with a weak pace bowling unit.

In this situation, Malik could step in as a crucial player for KKR. He has previous experience playing at the highest level, including his standout performance with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2022 when he took 22 wickets, including a five-wicket haul. However, injuries have kept him sidelined since then.

Malik is determined to make a comeback and expressed his eagerness to play all matches in IPL 2026. He has been working hard under KKR’s coaching staff, focusing on improving his accuracy and adding variations to his bowling. He acknowledges the importance of pace but also recognizes the need for slower deliveries in modern cricket.

With several key players already in the squad, Malik might have to rely on being an Impact Player or hope for a spot in the playing XI as KKR deals with their injury crisis. His speed, which often exceeds 140 km/h, could be his biggest asset this season.
