PBKS Captain Fined for Slow Over-Rate in IPL Match
Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer was fined ₹12 lakh on Wednesday for his team’s slow over-rate during their IPL 2026 match against Gujarat Titans (GT). This is the first time this season a captain has been penalised under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate offences.
Despite the fine, Punjab Kings managed to win their opening game by three wickets. Chasing a target of 162 runs, Cooper Connolly played a key role with an unbeaten 72 in 44 balls, helping the team reach the target in 19.1 overs. Prasidh Krishna’s impressive bowling, taking three wickets for 29 runs, led to Gujarat collapsing from 110/2 to 118/6. Connolly was named Player of the Match for his debut performance.
Shreyas Iyer praised his team’s composure during the match. After losing two quick wickets following his dismissal, he highlighted the importance of staying calm and commended Cooper Connolly’s composed batting. He also praised Connolly’s mindset and skill, noting his surreal shots against Rashid.
Punjab Kings will next face Chennai Super Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on April 3. The Super Kings, who lost their opening match against Rajasthan Royals, are aiming for their first home win of IPL 2026.
