Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi Accuses Government of Hiding Foreign Surveillance Risks

Rahul Gandhi recently claimed that the Modi government is endangering Indian security by covering up failures related to foreign surveillance. He pointed out that while public use of Chinese CCTV cameras has been banned, these devices remain installed in government buildings. Additionally, banned Chinese apps are reappearing under new names, and foreign AI platforms are processing sensitive data without proper disclosure.

Gandhi questioned the government in Parliament about the origin and security certification of government cameras, as well as which foreign AI platforms handle Indian data. The Ministry of Electronics and IT responded with general statements but provided no specific answers or figures.

Five years ago, the government acknowledged risks from ten lakh Chinese cameras but has yet to confirm if current surveillance systems are secure. Gandhi criticized this lack of transparency, stating it puts citizens’ security at risk.

In response, the Minister highlighted steps taken to enhance cybersecurity, including legal frameworks and reforms for CCTV security. However, Gandhi remains skeptical, emphasizing the need for clear information to ensure public safety.
