Kancheepuram Struggles Amid Growth and Tourism Pressure

After a drive of nearly two hours on the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway, travelers begin to see the tall towers of Ekambareswarar Temple. As they enter Kancheepuram, they pass many temples in a short distance. The town is famous for its rich history, beautiful temples, and many shops selling silk sarees. Everywhere, there is a sense of tradition and culture.

However, beyond this beauty, the town is facing many problems. Kancheepuram has been seeing a rise in population and more tourists visiting every year. Because of this, the town is finding it difficult to manage the growing pressure.

Traffic congestion has become a major issue, especially in busy areas. There is not enough organised parking space, and many vehicles are parked randomly, making roads even more crowded. Encroachments along the streets also reduce space for movement.

Another concern is poor sewage management, which affects cleanliness and public health. Even though the district is expected to grow further, especially with plans for a new airport nearby, it still has the feel of a semi-urban town and lacks proper infrastructure.

Kancheepuram has great potential to become a top tourist destination because of its history and culture. But for that to happen, better planning and development are needed. Improved infrastructure, proper traffic management, and stronger tourism initiatives could help the town grow while preserving its heritage.
