Sunil Gavaskar Calls for Respect for IPL Field Sanctity
Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to protect the quality and discipline of the playing field during IPL 2026 matches.
Gavaskar expressed concern that some IPL games are becoming too long, with certain matches stretching beyond four hours. He believes this affects the excitement and pace of the tournament.
To solve this issue, Gavaskar suggested that the BCCI should limit the number of people allowed on the field during breaks, strategic timeouts, and other interruptions. According to him, only two substitute players and two coaching staff members should be permitted on the field at any given time.
He criticized the growing trend of unnecessary staff members and extra players entering the field during games, saying it disturbs the rhythm of the match and reduces the professional atmosphere.
The former captain also recommended reducing the time allowed between wickets from two minutes to one minute, pointing out that modern batters are usually ready and waiting near the boundary or in the dugout.
Additionally, Gavaskar proposed stricter penalties for teams that deliberately waste time. For example, teams could face restrictions on the number of support staff or players allowed near the boundary during important moments.
Gavaskar stressed that the cricket field should remain a respected and disciplined space, meant only for active players and match officials. He believes these changes would improve match speed, maintain professionalism, and help keep the IPL exciting, competitive, and world-class.
