EC Launches QR Security for Counting Centres

The Election Commission of India introduced a new QR code-based photo identity card system on Thursday, April 30, 2026, to improve security at vote counting centres.
This new system is designed to prevent unauthorized individuals from entering counting locations during election result processes. By using QR code-enabled identity cards, officials aim to strengthen verification and ensure that only approved personnel can access sensitive counting areas.
The system will first be used during the vote counting scheduled for May 4 for Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry.
In addition, the system will also be implemented for byelections in seven Assembly constituencies across five states.
According to the Election Commission, after this initial rollout, the QR code identity card system will become a standard security feature for all future Lok Sabha elections, State Assembly elections, and byelections across India.
Officials say this move will increase transparency, improve election security, and reduce the risk of security breaches during one of the most critical stages of the democratic process.
